Which Household Insects Survive In Winter?

All household insects have a strategy for surviving winter. Some insects lay eggs or larvae and die off. Others go into a type of hibernation and become dormant, or less active. This is great news for homeowners because it means you’ll no longer have to deal with these pests. Unfortunately, there are some pests who are completely unaffected by the winter. In fact, these pests can actually become more of a nuisance as it gets colder.

Household insects you need to watch out for

As we’ve said, most pests don’t die in winter, but they do “disappear.” Then there are household insects which you need to watch out for. These include bed bugs and fleas. The reason why these pests thrive during winter is because they live in our homes. This means they can take advantage of things like indoor heating and are not affected by the cold. The problem here is that indoor heating can act almost like an incubator for these pests. Not only does it allow them to survive, but they may actually breed more rapidly than usual. This is why it’s such a good idea to eliminate these pests before the winter arrives.

Other pests which also hang around during winter, but are far less of a problem, are silverfish and woodworm. Silverfish are generally not an issue and won’t attack your Halloween pumpkins. We say that because these household insects do not harm humans or cause as much damage as other pests. That being said, these insects can become a nuisance if they start to eat through your books.

Other insects that might cause a problem in winter

Woodworm, on the other hand, can become a major problem of winter insect invasions. These pests can chew through the timbers in your home and cause immense amounts of damage. With this in mind, winter is a great time to get rid of these pests. That’s because they do become somewhat dormant and easier to kill.

Then you also have queen wasps and spiders. Wasps are one of the household insects which die during winter. What happens is that these bugs prepare the queen for winter and then pass away. Once this happens, the queen leaves the nest and finds a safe place to hide during Winter. When it starts getting warmer, she emerges and lays eggs. These eggs hatch and the new wasps start rebuilding their nest. The key here is that if you can find and remove the queen, it will prevent the wasps from returning. Finally, you have spiders. These insects will sometimes come indoors as it gets colder. Like the above insects, they do this because they are seeking warmth and food.
