Can Pest Control Get Rid Of Silverfish?

Silverfish are those small crawling insects you often see on your carpets. They are easy to identify due to their silver colour and distinctive fish-like shape. The good news, when it comes to these pests, is that they are mostly harmless.

They do not carry any type of disease, and are usually unnoticeable. That being said, these are times when you may want to get rid of silverfish.

Why it may be a good idea to get rid of silverfish

It’s often a good idea to remove these pests as they can cause all sorts of insect problems. This is simply because they eat anything. Silverfish feed primarily on carbohydrates and proteins. This means they are happy with things like flour, cereals, oats and meat. They will even eat paper, glue, wallpaper and starches. These pests are  known to attack things like silk, cotton, leather, and other fabrics. These pests are also known for being particularly fond of eating books. What this means is that eventually silverfish can become a nuisance.

The good news is that you can easily get rid of silverfish. Like all other pests, they can be exterminated with fumigation, or heat treatments. In fact, these pests die easily, and are actually one of the simplest to remove. One permanent treatment of fumigation or heat will destroy them.

Self help or pest control for silverfish?

But before you do this and turn to heat treatment, you may want to solve the problem yourself. If you want to get rid of silverfish, the key is to make your home uninhabitable. These pests gravitate towards places that are dark and damp. This includes areas like cupboards, attics and basements. You may also find them hiding in garages and sheds. If these living areas are also small crevices and cracks, even better.

The best thing to do is clean these areas out. Go through your cupboards and other areas mentioned on this list. Clean everything thoroughly and remove sources of damp and moisture. If you have large cracks and crevices, then you could hit these with bug spray. Also make sure that sources of food are tightly sealed and packed away in cupboards that shut properly.

If you do all of this right, then you should be able to get rid of Silverfish. That being said, you may still see them crawling around. It could be tricky, for example, if you have many books.
