8 Tips to Prevent Unwanted Flies in the Kitchen

Flies in the kitchen are an unbelievable nuisance. What’s more, these pests can contaminate food and spread serious diseases. But what can you do about this problem and how do you get rid of flies for good?

1. Empty bins

Flies can only lay their eggs in decomposing matter. This means they need rotting food to breed. But that’s why emptying your bin is the easiest way to get rid of flies in the kitchen. Do this as often as possible and also clean out your bin often.

2. Install screens

Screens can be placed over windows. This prevents flies from getting into the kitchen. Note that these screens do not have to be permanent. Many fly screens are retractable. For example, some work with magnets. You would place these around your window frame. You then attach the screen to these magnets.

3. Prevent flies from entering through doorways

You can install screen doors in outside entrances to stop these food pests that invade kitchens. With inside doorways you can use a beaded curtain. Plastic curtains are also a great way to prevent flies in the kitchen.

4. Install fans

Strong fans will blow away flies and get rid of them. You have a number of options here, starting with a ceiling fan. You can also install wall mounted fans, place fans on your countertops or get special fly fans. These fans blow air upwards. This allows them to get rid of flies, without disturbing humans.

5. Put up fly paper

This is one of the easiest ways to get rid of flies in the kitchen. The paper is coated with a sweet substance which attracts flies towards the fruit fly traps. It is also covered in sticky, toxic glue that kills flies. You can hang this paper from your ceiling, or place it on walls.

6. Place fly traps

It is possible to purchase these traps online or made at home. To make a DIY version rather than buy some options for fly control products, take a plastic bottle and cut it in half. Invert the top half into the bottom. Then place a piece of bait. Fruit works well. The flies will enter this trap and be unable to escape.

7. UV blue light traps

These are commonly used in commercial kitchens (because they work), and therefore can also be used in the home. The flies are attracted to these devices, but when they enter they are “zapped” and killed.
